We’re All Afraid of the Dark March 24, 2007

What is it about the dark that makes people so afraid?  Here’s a story that might “shed some light” on the subject:

At about 3 AM a couple of nights ago, my three year old daughter came bursting though my bedroom door screaming, “DADDY, It’s coming to get me!”.  I didn’t see what was after her, but she sure had me convinced.  I shot up out of the bed and ran into her room to see what “it” was.  I didn’t see anything, so I asked her what was chasing her and where it went.  Peeking from behind my legs she said “It was a big cat and its right there”.  I looked over to where she was pointing and saw nothing but a pile of clothes.  I tried to take her near the pile to show her that it was only some of her clothes, but she refused to move.  ”What are you afraid of baby? Its just your clothes.” She replied, “No its the big cat and its gonna get me”.  At that moment it hit me.  Just turn on the light so she can see what it really is.  After I turned on the light she could see that the big cat was just a basket full of her dirty clothes.  Instantly, she had peace.  I put her back to bed and she slept through the rest of the night.

It’s easy to think that children are the only one’s who are afraid of the dark.  Actually we’re all afraid of the dark in some way.  For some people that means literal darkness, but I’m refering to the darkness of the unknown.  Can you think of anything that you’ve been afraid of trying to achieve?  What is it about that thing that keeps you hiding in your comfort zone?  We all know that the scary part is not knowing what is actually out there, but how can we get over the fear of the unknown that keeps us boxed in?  I say, just turn on the lights.  Don’t just stand there peering into the unknown while fear tightens its grip on you.  Do something that can give you some insight into what you don’t know.  Find someone who knows more about what’s out there and can see you through the darkness.  Do a little research and cast some light on the unknown.  Going through darkness isn’t as scary when you know how to turn the lights on.

“Nobody makes a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do little.” -Edmund Burke

Do you have a dream in life?  If so, ask yourself this question: What have I done today to move closer to achieving my dream?  When it comes to dreams, there are two categories of people–those who are moving toward their dreams and those whose dreams are moving away from them.  People who want to achieve their dreams do something everday that will move them closer to their prize.  Even if its something small, they find some way to get ahead.  The ones whose dreams are moving away from them just talk about what they want to do, but never take action.  As time passes their window of opportunity grows smaller and smaller.

While I was walking through the airport once, I stepped onto one of those treadmills (I don’t know the technical term) in the terminal that moves you along with your luggage so that you don’t have to walk.  The problem was that I stepped onto the wrong side of it, so it was taking me in the direction opposite of where I wanted to go.  Instead of turning back, I just hurried to the other end to get off and I was on my way.  Sure, it would have been easy to just turn around and take one going in the right direction, but I was gaining a valuable insight during that experience.  Here it is: Following your dreams is like me walking on that treadmill.  You can stop moving all together and drift further away from where you want go, you could walk just enough to get by and stay in the same place for the rest of your life, or you could pick up the pace and do what you’ve got to do to make it to the other side.  What have you been doing up to this point in your life.  Better yet, what are you willing to start doing today to make your dreams come true?
